For more than twelve years, Stadtreinigung Hamburg (SRH) has relied on Continental for tire management, including repair and service for its approximately 1,100 vehicles. Find out here how the waste disposal company and the environment benefit from this.
The waste disposal company for the metropolis on the Elbe operates around 1,100 vehicles at its seven locations. SRH has placed tire management, including repair and service, entirely in the hands of Continental. The modern fleet is equipped with the Bandvulc Wastemaster. This robust, sidewall reinforced tire from Continental is specially designed for waste management operations. The innovative Armorband technology, which makes sidewall wear visible, contributes to this.
Ready for action around the clock
“The operational safety of the fleet is our top priority,” emphasizes Oliver Braune from the municipal waste disposal fleet. That’s why professionals take care of the tires: Vergölst, the German counterpart to the international tire dealer Bestdrive, provide a 24/7 tire service. This includes breakdown services and regular maintenance.

The retreaded Bandvulc Wastemaster 5 premium tire also impresses with its high operational reliability and extremely long service life. “With this tire and an all-round tire service as part of our ContiLifeCycle concept, we help waste disposal companies to save costs and reduce their emissions,” explains Jan-Ole van Lengen, Head of ContiLifeCycle Germany at Continental. “In this way, they can contribute to their corporate goals such as circular economy, high recycling rates, resource conservation and maximum sustainability.”
Tough operating conditions
In the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, around 800,000 tons of private waste and a good 600,000 tons of commercial waste occur every year. The city’s waste management service disposes a large proportion of this. “Our 280 or so waste disposal vehicles drive through the narrowest streets. The tires really have to do a tough job,” says Oliver Braune. “They have to be able to get through everywhere all year round, cope with the smallest turning radii and withstand kerb contacts.”

The Wastemaster stays on the vehicle for an average of four years at the Hamburg city cleaning service. That’s because it has real take-up qualities: The robust sidewall technology with a solid shoulder design protects against tire damage as well as wear from curbs. “And the Armor band on the sidewall indicates when the tire needs to be changed,” adds Peter Neumann, Key Account Manager at Vergölst GmbH in Hamburg. “This prevents tire failures and casing damage.” The Wastemaster 5 also has good stone ejection properties and bears the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol (3PMSF). Especially in winter conditions, this symbol indicates reliable traction, good grip and safe handling.
The Wastemaster 5: advantages at a glance
- Robust sidewall technology with a solid shoulder design
- Armorband wear control
- Good stone ejection properties
- Reliable traction, good grip and safe handling in winter weather conditions
“Retreading is also very important to us because we want to be resource-efficient on the road,” says Oliver Braune. “With retreaded tires, we can reuse up to 70 percent of the material from our own carcasses.”
Cooperation based on trust
Both sides benefit from the trusting, long-term collaboration. Stadtreinigung Hamburg can rely on Continental’s solutions for its entire tire management and concentrate on its core business. In turn, Continental’s tire developers can use the valuable experience of the waste disposal experts to further improve the Wastemaster.
