World record! On the Contidrom, Continental’s test track, trucker Hans “Housi” Frei has set the range record for electric trucks: 1,099 kilometers on one charge! Also on the team: an e-truck from Designwerk’s sub brand Futuricum with Continental’s efficient tires, which are designed for particularly low rolling resistance.
The fact that the truck can travel so far without intermediate charging is thanks to its 680-kWh battery. By way of comparison, this is enough to power an average household for months. On the Contidrom, the charge was used up after just 23 hours and 392 laps.
Endurance with Designwerk in everyday use as well
Normally, the world record truck runs on tires from the Continental EcoRegional product line for the Swiss parcel service DPD in regional transport. It is based on a Volvo FH that Designwerk has converted to electric drive. The 19-ton truck with 680 hp can cover up to 760 kilometers on one battery charge without cargo in real life.
Continental’s Tires put through their paces
On the Contidrom, Continental and its development partner put tire prototypes through their paces. This is because the higher torque when starting off and accelerating the electric vehicles, as well as their greater weight, place completely new demands on the tires.
Driver Housi, also known as the craziest trucker in Switzerland, was able to take the ultimately successful record attempt in his stride. After all, he has already set some top marks in driving backwards.
